Focal Point

Seminar Series - Seminar 3

Date: Friday, January 20, 2012
Time: 4:00-5:00 pm

Location: Heritage Room, ACES Library

Topic: "Microalgae Biofuels: Strain selection and metabolism"

Speaker: Dr. Jurgen Polle, Professor of biology at the City University of New York, Brooklyn

Abstract: Microalgae belong to very diverse groups of photosynthetic organisms. Out of thousands of known species of microalgae, still only a few strains are exploited in mass culture. For development of new strains, discovery of novel strains isolated from natural habitats will be presented. Specific examples will include high-throughput isolation of new strains and screening techniques including application of fluorescent dyes for lipid contents and lipid profiling by mass spectrometry. In addition, a brief overview will be given on secondary stress metabolism with a focus on green algae.
